The Trademark Controversy Page

We inadvertently ran afoul of the Volvo Cars of North America legal department by using the trademarked name "Volvo" in our Internet address. In early October, VCNA served us with a "Cease and Desist" order preventing us from using that name in our address and in any materials used to identify this magazine.

This action resulted in a public relations problem for VCNA, and we called upon them to establish a clear and consistent policy regarding permissible uses of Volvo trademarks on the Internet. We have attempted to assist them in establishing this policy and have taken what efforts we can to ensure that the policy will be as generous to website owners as possible.

VCNA has produced a rough draft of such a policy, and it is currently under review by AB Volvo in Sweden. It is our impression that VCNA has been responsive to our suggestions, takes the matter seriously, and is eager to be on good terms with the Volvo Internet community. It will take a bit more time for the policy to be finalized and approved by the parent company.

We will report new developments as they occur.
